A player who declares a kong has to draw an additional tile, taken from the other end of the wall. In other words, NNNN EEEE WWWW SS is not a valid hand, and requires one additional meld.<br /><br />One very interesting thing about non-NMJL mahjong is that there are often multiple ways to win. For instance, with XXX XXX XXX 34 XX (with XXX representing any meld and XX any pair), the hand can be completed with a 2 or a 5. It's possible to build up very powerful patterns, like XXX XXX 5556777, which can win on a 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8!<br /><br />(From a big fan of Japanese mahjong, who found this while looking for information on the (incredibly complex!)
